Studio CUE produces and Yasunori Ide directs Kill Ao (also known as Kill Blue), a new 2026 action-comedy anime. The story adapts Tadatoshi Fujimaki’s manga about a 39-year-old hitman regressed to the body of a 13-year-old.

Weekly Shonen Jump is running out of massive hits after the conclusion of series like My Hero Academia. They desperately need new franchises. That’s why they greenlit Kill Ao so quickly, only three years after the manga’s 2023 debut. Tadatoshi Fujimaki previously created Kuroko’s Basketball. That hit sold over 30 million copies. Even so, the premise of a 39-year-old assassin trapped in a middle schooler’s body sounded like a tired cliché.
Fortunately, the anime is a surprise and I highly recommend it.
Why the Adaptation Works So Well
Studio CUE did an excellent job. Director Hiro Kaburagi keeps the pacing fast and fun. You won’t get bored. The comedy heavily resembles classics like Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu. Juzo Ogami, the 39-year-old protagonist, tries to act like a normal 13-year-old kid. The resulting situations are absurd.

Plus, the humor plays with de-aging clichés. Juzo briefly reverts to his adult body, but his clothes magically do not rip. You will immediately think of Hulk or Conan Edogawa physics.
Comparing the Competitors
Sakamoto Days focuses heavily on brutal fight choreographies and the underworld. In contrast, Kill Ao balances action with everyday school life. It also differs from Spy x Family. You will not find a wholesome family dynamic here. Instead, you get the comedic clash of a middle-aged man dealing with teenagers.
The fight animation has real weight. In episode six, Juzo plays a tense futsal match against Tenma Tendo. Tenma is athletically elite but socially clueless. He even confesses his love to Chisato in the most casual way possible. As a bonus, Atsumi Tenezaki (the voice behind Frieren) plays Chisato.
Music and Marketing Powerhouses
The music is another of its main strengths. Avex chose K-pop groups for the soundtrack. They selected aespa for the opening (‘ATTITUDE’) and RIIZE for the ending (‘KILL SHOT’). It is a clever cross-marketing move. And it worked beautifully.
The opening is a high-energy electronic rock track. It pumps you up instantly and fits Juzo’s double life.
Are you looking for a fresh, well-animated, and fun action-comedy? Give this show a chance. It will give you a good laugh.
